This item looks good on paper but in practice is quite unusable. In order to have a workable yardage reading from which to select a club, it is necessary to hold the scope absolutely rock solid while sighting on the green pin. This is an impossible task. While the manufacturer acknowledges that the reading is approximate, “approximate” takes on whole new meaning with this scope. Readings are easily + or – 20 yards. Compared with this size of an error, my eyeball does equally as good a job.

    Barska Golf Scope

The Barska golf scope has significantly negative reviews online. I was hesitant to try it, but I’ve known Barska to make really inexpensive optics that were of acceptable quality. The Barska 8×22 golf scope is a good example. The quality isn’t the best. I can spot some residue/deposits on the inside of the lens which is visible at certain angles. The eyepiece cover was warped right out of the box. However, the sight picture is very clean and the reticle is extremely sharp. If the sight picture and/or reticle is blurry, I recommend you view it with your vision corrected to 20/20 because there is no diopter adjustment or focus adjustment.

The eye relief is very short, which means you cannot use eyeglasses, sunglasses, or goggles while viewing the scope. There can be a lot of wobble at longer distances, but you are just guesstimating range with the reticle, so once the flag comes into view and hits the markings you can get a good idea of the range out to a maximum marked range of 200 yards. I found myself using the stakes on the fairway whenever possible but when they are missing or down for grass cutting, the scope saved my butt a few times. For reducing wobble, consider using your golf club as a monopod for the front of the scope.

My experience with optics ranges from Celestron Binoculars, Bushnell rifle scopes and Binoculars, Steiner issued binoculars, Trijicon ACOG rifle scopes, BSA/Barska scopes and Aimpoint/EOTech red dot sights so I have an understanding of sight picture clarity, distortion, and can tell the difference between junk optics and good optics. This Barska scope has very strong magnification in such a small package, but surprisingly with such a small objective lens and exit pupil, the sight picture is clear enough for me to watch what a player was doing 500+ yards away at the green. It requires stabilization with a monopod (golf club) or some sturdy object to be able to spot your ball, but it was intended as a quick and dirty range estimator for the flag – and it does this job very well especially at this price. Is the sight picture as clean as that of a scope that costs a grand or more? No. But does it need to be?

Overall: 4/5 stars. It is not a bad scope for this price. It certainly is not a state of the art GPS/Laser based rangefinder, but rather uses basic arithmetic similar to Minute of Angle (MOA) calculations translated into a very simple reticle where you place the bottom line on the green and see where the top of the flag resides to determine range. The range is only marked out for 200 yards, there is enough room for them to mark it out to say, 500 yards.

I bought this and found it to be extremely cheaply made and not water proof at all, I would not recommend buying this unless you are looking to waste money on such a poorly made item not even good enough for a gift.
